Hearing Scheduled On Brickell Avenue Supertall Church Site

Miami’s Historic and Environmental Preservation Board has scheduled a hearing on the Brickell Avenue’s First Presbyterian Church property, where a supertall tower could be built.

The First Presbyterian Church and partner developer 13th Floor Key Church, LLC are requesting an amendment to the historic designation.

An iconic, 80-story tower is being planned on the property. The property is designated historic.

The board will consider removing historic designation from a surface parking lot and educational building to allow for the new development. The educational building was constructed years after the original church building was built.

Miami’s Planning Department is recommending that the board approve the request, and classify the school building and parking lot as non-contributing.

The Board meeting is scheduled for December 3. To read the full application and staff report, click here.

To think… alterations to a parking lot have to go through the HEPB, meanwhile so many prewar buildings in this city that are worthy of historic designation, are destroyed or altered beyond recognition for or into concrete boxes.

sad truth. america has so little soul, its more like a corporation than a nation.

Why not incorporating the church into the design? It would be much nicer.

a lot of vascularity in the new design

The design is a little embarrassing. Imagine being the person who lives in the “Dildo” building.

Not next to a super phallic like that…don’t be blasphemous.

But the waterfront parking lot is historic. WWJD?

Is that the parking lot where a tent and tables used to be set up and stone crabs were sold during weekday lunchtime?

Does Brickell really need another tower, or would it be better to design a green space for residents instead? With so many buildings already in the area, isn’t it time to prioritize nature and community spaces?

it will be mostly shade anyway. Grab a waterfront spot and make a greenspace. At least mornings it will be sunny and a view to boot.

To answer your question, yes, Brickell needs lots more towers.

They would have to charge an entrance fee to that dream park that would rival a 3 day Disney pass to make up for the lost profits of foregoing selling condos on the land.

Good thing absolutely nobody is proposing to change the church in any way!

Remove that awful lot and build a park there. The food trucks are nice, yoga classes are cool. Just remove the cars and plant some trees!

Glorious development. Will allow Miami to each “new heights”. The incoming new administration under the leadership of Trump will accelerate Miami’s development and signal “a new era”

Not really, trickledown taxes/tarriffs will increase prices. Loan rates go up and sales start to slow to a sluggish again. Building condos/apts/business slows…. not for another 5 years to get back going.

Just demo it already. It’s going to happen regardless. Miami is ran by developers so nothing is sacred. Stop wasting time and money pretending that the Historical Board is doing anything. Just collect your envelope and look the other way.

No reason to knock down a beautiful building when there are tons of empty lots/abandoned buildings in the urban core and even Brickell still. When all the old homes are torn down and every empty lot has infill, then talk to me about knocking down this church.

churches are the biggest wastes of space around, and they need to pay taxes too.

Please don’t even build that building. This church is under historic preservation under federal law and it’s also on the registry of historic places. So please don’t.

Federal designation is a registry, and that’s it. Protection is at the local level, and unfortunately Miami doesn’t have a good track record of it.
