Developer Plans To Activate 120-Year-Old First Miami School House

Miami commissioners are scheduled to vote on a plan that would see the First Miami School House in Brickell activated by a developer.

The building dates to around 1905. It was relocated several decades ago from a nearby property where the Axis condo towers were built.

The approximately 3,000-square-foot building is now in Southside Park, which itself is being rebuilt by the developer building the massive Mercedes Benz Places towers next door.

The developer building the Mercedes towers has agreed to “activate the School House for the public use and enjoyment, specifically including for commercial, retail, and restaurant/café purposes, and including interior and exterior renovations to preserve and enhance the historic structure,” a resolution states.

A minimum of $6,250 plus a percentage of receipts would be paid in rent annually. The base rent would also increase annually.

Miami Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the proposal at a December 12 meeting.

Protection of the building is in place during construction of the Mercedes Benz Places tower. A large shield was added on top after this photo was taken:

Demolish it

Can it just be demolished? It adds nothing that it was the first schoolhouse – its just in the way now.

Did they really built a concrete shell around it just to protect it?

Refreshing to see Brickell saving part of it’s history instead of demolishing it for another stucco and glass air bnb tower!

Very good. Along with the crappy looking redesign of Southside Park, I was worried how juxtaposed this treasure would look next to the previous mutant rendition of this project, but after the Benz redesign I am optimistic.

What does the developer mean by the word “activate”?

What do you think? Whistle blower words are the norm with developers in Miami now.

An old building in Miami. You realize this city existed before you were born?
