Miami-Dade’s planned Northeast Corridor train service has received Federal Transit Administration approval to move to the engineering phase.

The FTA issued a pre-award with a maximum of $389m towards the project (Miami-Dade was requesting $454m), according to a letter issued October 23.

The county will fund an additional $338m, while the State of Florida will provide $200m.

The project originally had a an estimated budget of $538m, of which $264m was to have been federal funding.

The Northeast Corridor is planned to include seven station and run 13.5 miles. The stations are planned at:

  • MiamiCentral
  • Wynwood – NE 27th Street
  • Design District – NE 39th Street
  • Little Haiti – NE 61st Street
  • North Miami – NE 123rd Street
  • FIU/Biscayne – NE 151st Street
  • Aventura

Current (2023) ridership was forecast at 10,800 daily trips, rising to 21,400 in 2045.

Beating a dead horse, but missed opportunity not to include at or near 79th Street.

not just beating the horse, but shooting it with an AK47.

They really need to do something about all these at grade crossings. Brightline (we hope) is going to keep running more and more trains, then there will be this NE corridor (also hopefully running more often at some point). That’s a lot of trains crossing these streets. How much did it cost to elevate Ives Dairy Rd over the tracks? They should do that for 186th, 163rd, and 123rd, and do something with the 36th street crossing.

Who do you think is going to pay for that? Brightline? Taxpayers?

Who is THEY?

i think people can handle waiting a couple of minutes for trains to pass by. The cost to elevate the tracks or the road would be very large and doubtful that Brightline would spend any of their own money to do that.

It’s more than cost. Ramping that much road kills access to hundreds of feet of adjacent lots.

I agree . At least 186th and 163rd

now we just need metrorail to expand west towards FIU’s modesto campus and then south towards kendall and homestead

Mass Transit in Midtown

This is a step in the right direction but rapid transit in the greater Midtown Miami area (Wynwood, Edgewater, and Design District) is still necessary. This line is commuter rail and wouldn’t run frequently enough to fully service this area given how dense it currently is and will only continue to grow

Plan Better

It looks that this project will cost an average of $200 million per station (Miami Central and Aventura are existing.).
What is involved in building a commuter rail station?

Ridership is gonna exceed expectations.

Like the south branch of metrorail is like 20k? 30k pre-pandemic… however this frequency is gonna be bad. So maybe 10k is good.

Two miles per station for commuter rail is already considered pretty close spacing, but due to the more urban character here they could be closer and include a 79th Street stop and a north Miami Beach stop.

151st is NMB, so I think 163rd is too close

Nope, commuter rail, similar to Tri-Rail

No, but better than Metromoober.

How easy is the transfer to metro rail from
Miami Central? Do you have to leave Miami central, go outside and up to the metro rail station or how does it work?

There is a ramp to Gov’t Center station but it’s on the end where the Starbucks is that closed down. But if you’re on Brightline , you can go straight to Historic Overtown station which is just behind the Miami Central entrance.

If you are riding Tri-Rail, you can either go down to the Brightline lobby and go outside and walk over to the Overtown Metrorail station. It’s literally just a minute or two around the corner. Or you can walk to the south end of the Tri-Rail platform go through the double doors, and there is a pedestrian bridge that connects you to Metrorail and Metrormover Inner Loop at Government Center.

To Tell The T

Waste of time and money unless the end goal of prioritizing mass transit. Until outer suburban sprawl is rampant, parking mandates are still in place Metrorail, Mover and buses will continue to run empty.

Anonymous

The metrorail and mover are completely packed during the week. As in, people are so crammed that not all the people waiting on the platform can fit and they have to wait for the next train. I see it literally every Mon-Friday.

Just because you live in the fringe of suburban west kendall with empty buses, doesn’t mean that your little neck of the woods represents the whole of Miami or its needs.

Out of curiosity, are they packed north of Government Center? I see the train as it goes near Civic Center and it looks empty.

Precisely zero of the prospective buyers of the hi-end lux condos this site promotes give af about any of this. I know these transit bloggings get lots of comment traffic but frankly you got to your market better.
