Architect For ‘Ultra-Modern’ Four-Level Terminal At MIA Up For Vote

Miami-Dade commissioners are scheduled to vote on a contract with an architect for a rebuild and expansion of the Central Terminal at Miami International Airport.

The county wants to build a facility that is ultra-modern, stylish, futuristic, and technology driven, a Miami-Dade memo states.

A total of eleven proposals were received from architects by an April deadline. A selection committee ranked Carty Architecture of Coral gables the top ranked proposal, and the county is recommending commissioners approve a $39m contract with the firm.

Plans include a new four-level infill building between concourses E and F, connected to both the South and North terminals on levels 2 and 3 post security. Existing areas will be partially demolished to make way for construction.

There will also be a new security checkpoint, new concessions, and a raised roof in an existing area to increase natural light.

Miami-Dade’s Airport and Economic Development Committee Agenda is scheduled to vote on the contract award at a meeting on October 9 (a vote on a feasibility study for a potential new airport is scheduled for the same meeting).

11 proposals received & they choose the Firm that’s already designed (mediocre) terminals at MIA?

Some things will never change…

Here’s a list of their previous Aviation projects, nothing noteworthy of course:

-Signature Flight Support Sports Charter Terminal, Miami, FL

-Tocumen International Airport, South Expansion, Panama City, Panama

-Miami International Airport, South Terminal Expansion, Miami, FL

-Miami International Airport Consolidated Administration Building, Programming and Conceptual Design, Miami, FL

-Miami International Airport, Central Terminal Ticket Counters F, G, Miami, FL

-Miami International Airport Regional Commuter Facility D60 new gate, Miami, FL

-Miami International Airport CTX 5800 Implementation at various locations, Miami, FL

-Miami International Airport Baggage Belt Modifications at F-G, Miami, FL

-TSA Upgrades, Miami International Airport, South Terminal Expansion, Miami FL

-Temporary Post Earthquake Terminal, Toussaint Louverture International Airport, Haiti

-John F. Kennedy International Airport, Terminal One, New York, NY

-Greater Buffalo International Airport, Buffalo, NY

Newark Airport, United Airlines Satellite, Newark, NJ

Because it’s not about picking the best person for the job – more than likely there is an existing personal relationship and someone there is getting rich af

No wonder Tocumen International in Panamá literally feels like a flea market. El Dorado International in Colombia could never.

Looks like they have the qualifications and experience.
The architects always get bonus points in these RFPs when they are local.

The responding firms were: CARTY ARCHITECTURE, LEO A DALY COMPANY, BERMELLO AJAMIL & PARTNERS, PERKINS & WILL ARCHITECTS, ZYSCOVICH ARCITECTS, HELLMUTH OBATA & KASSABAUM, and STANTEC. Carty has the least body of work relative to airport, transportation or even mix-use yet they seem to be the only women owned enterprise and have done a lot o=f work for Miami dade County. Seems that may be the real driving criteria versus experience and design excellence. So who you know and how you know vs what you know!

Better than Zyscovich or Stantec TBH.

The MDCC will vote on #1 spending more money on MIA and #2 spending money on a feasibility study about a new airport that would render #1 a big waste of money.

The “feasibility study” will be a monster sized number so big, that it will make the other proposal look palatable.

Well any new airport would be thirty to forty years out.

These commissioners have too much say in stuff they are not educated on. We need experts in all these individual fields to advice us, not them

No they don’t. Rather have someone in charge than 2-3 international corporations. The local commmisioners are reasonable people, just present a good idea.

Ultimately, the decision will be made by the person that approves the funding for this project. Almost always they control whatever firm is working on the project, that way it’s their vision that only matters.

Experts in their field is called Aristocracy. We currently have mob rule through Democracy.

I am in favor of a brand new airport (either complete replacement of all terminals or on a new location connect by rapid transit)

The airport is the first thing visitors see when visiting Miami. To “elevate” Miami to a world-class destination the Airport (and our transit) must match those of Singapore, Dubai, Madrid or Shenzhen etc.

This “new era” would then contirm Miami’s path towards becoming as a civilized 1st world city, after all.

They should consider moving the cargo to another airport and leave MIA for passangers only. They could easily build a new airports terminal where the cargo aerea is.

As if that would go well with all the industrial uses that surround the airport.

Carty Architecture? This city is a joke

At least it’s not Arquitectonica. By the time this work is completed, if ever, their “new” circa 2007 terminal will be in worse condition.

Great news, and very much needed! Thanks. Just look at the picture, the airport looks like a third world puddle hopper camp ground.

Get Calatrava to do the work as he did at the Montevideo Airport, that is forward-thinking and an architectural gem! Crap firm!

Howard Roark

Thats a Rafael Viñoly Design, not Calatrava. Viñoly was a wonderful architect and his firm has survived him and doing transportation work but probably wasn’t identified by MD County as they tend to stay insular.
